The focus of child development has been primarily about the development of the body and the brain. Science today believes that human beings are exclusively bodies and brains. This is based on the fact that none of our technologies have been able to detect any other ‘part’ of a human being. Of course 2500 years ago we couldn’t detect atoms, and yet some philosophers back then tried to explain the universe and its diversity by presenting the idea that tiny invisible particles made up larger things. Everyone else was wrong till about 1850 – when with electricity we were finally able to ‘see’ an atom.
Here is a question for you to ponder. If we are only a body and a brain, and we develop and nourish these two parts of a human being into both a star athlete who then becomes a medical doctor – clearly we’ve done a great job at developing both – so how do we then explain the high rates of depression, divorce, drug addiction and suicide in this profession? Or among other highly successful people? Wouldn’t the key to success and happiness be developing one’s body and brain? Read more...
